Gerdau is currently seeking a Utility Person/Excavator Operator for the Covington, Va. location.
Job
Summary:
Work with excavator/cranes to plan, lay out, sort and perform the sequence of loading, unloading, weighing, and positioning to furnish internal and external customers with scrap metal. Work from railcar lists, weigh bills, etc., following instructions and recognized standard operating methods and procedures. Coordinate activities with other Yard Operators, Scale Operator, and Shredder operator. Communication with customers/scrap dealers (people selling ferrous material). Inspect their materials and accept or reject it.

Primary Duties and
Responsibilities:
Operate the loader and/or the crane to assist in loading and unloading oversize scrap or crushed cars from trucks and railcars.
Work involves a variety of tasks, simple through moderately complex in nature, requiring some care to ensure correct procedures are being followed.
Shift full and empty cars, operate locomotive, activate switches, couple and uncouple cars, and set brakes or wheel blocks as requested.
Ensure that all incoming scrap is scanned for radiation and that all material that fails the scan is quarantined and the appropriate personnel are notified.
Count and record car numbers remaining or received in yard each day.
Take corrective actions and report when yard and building scrap inventory become out of balance with respect to established procedures.
Inspect and verify scrap for grade and quality. Identify deductions and downgrades.
Record and report all discrepancies via written reports, the Mayer Scrap System and photographs.
Monitor scrap supply in yard; coordinate activities to ensure melt shop requirements are met.
Ensure that all cars leaving yard are clean to avoid rejection and demurrage.
Prepare scrap tickets for all product received. Record information required in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Perform daily preventative maintenance checks on machinery; this includes greasing and checking oil and fluids.

Requirements:
Minimum of HS Diploma/GED
Excavator, cranes and/or front end loader experience required
Minimum of 2 years related experience in heavy industrial/manufacturing environment (scrap metals and steel experience a plus) operating excavators, cranes and/or front end loaders.
Forklift and/or skid steer driving experience, operation of Band strongly preferred
Previous experience performing preventative maintenance on heavy machinery.
Required to have the ability to lift 50
lbs, stand for long periods of time and be comfortable working in a heavy manufacturing environment. This includes working in all weather conditions and shop conditions.
Good work ethic
Will need computer skills and good organization skills
Must have good customer service skills
Read, write, speak English, be organized, follow instruction, able to work on own with minimal supervision at times.
High level of safety awareness
Must be able to pass criminal background check, pre-employment physical
